Education and training can be costly. The Royal Navy and Royal Marines offer scholarships, sponsorships and help with the cost of university for potential Officers. This means they could get a degree, with a guaranteed job at the end of it, without running up huge student debts.

Before joining

A-level sponsorship

Sixth-Form scholarships of £1,050 per year are available for students in Year 11 or 12.

Potential Royal Navy Engineering Officers can alternatively apply to study for their A-Levels at the Defence Sixth-Form College, Welbeck.

The College has recently moved to a new purpose-built campus near Loughborough in Leicestershire, and offers a wide and varied A-level curriculum including sciences, electronics, history and politics. Students at the College board full-time. Generous means test support is available to help with fees. Royal Navy Welbeck students are also automatically enrolled on the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme.

Degree Sponsorship

Various schemes exist to support potential Royal Navy Officers while they study for their degree. Arts students can apply for £1,500 per year, and Engineers for £4,000 per year, wherever in the country they are attending university.

Aspiring Engineer Officers can apply to the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS ), which offers £5,500 per year to students at five specified universities in the UK (Aston, Loughborough, Newcastle, Northumbria, Southampton and Oxbridge).

The University Cadetship scheme is also open to the very best candidates for several branches. Successful applicants undertake a year’s Officer training before going to University. They are paid as a Royal Naval Officer while studying.

Engineer Graduates applying to join the Royal Navy as Officers may be eligible for a Golden Hello of £12,000 on joining.

Students can get anywhere between £1,500 and £5,500 a year paid towards their university costs, depending on the course. There’s also a university cadetship scheme, which means you will be paid a substantial salary while studying. 

After joining

Initial Support Through Fully Funded Apprenticeships

All new recruits to the Royal Navy embark on an Apprenticeship appropriate to their specialisation, this includes an NVQ Level 2.

Many specialisations have opportunities to further these qualifications with accreditation of your training through Advanced Apprenticeships up to Foundation Degree level and beyond many of these routes will be fully funded.

Continuing Support

The longer you serve in the Royal Navy the more your experience is valued. From mid to late career, accreditation to professional bodies such as City & Guilds, the Institute of Leadership and Management and the Chartered Management Institute is available. Cash Support

The Royal Navy supports Life Long Learning and funds for study are available to everyone, regardless of rank.

• Standard Learning Credits - up to £175 per person per Financial Year.
• After 4 years of service you will qualify for up to £3,000 in Enhanced Learning Credits and, if not used, after 8 years service up to £6,000.
